I was a plump child and a chubby teenager. As an adult I was generously proportioned. I had no quarrel with my body, until I read that exercise is mandatory to keep oneself healthy. I Wanted to exercise or go for a walk at least but I used to procrastinate about it. Saying to myself, tomorrow I’ll definitely go for a walk, I kept putting it off. I would rather sit and read my Sidney Sheldon than break a sweat. But then, something changed. I realized that I was wasting my life and health by being lazy.
How did I conquer my laziness to exercise? Well, it wasn't easy. It took a lot of motivation, discipline and perseverance. But I also used some tricks that helped me along the way. Here are some of them:
- I set realistic goals and rewarded myself for achieving them. For example, I started with 10 minutes of walking a day and gradually increased it to 30 minutes. Every time I reached a milestone, I treated myself to something nice, like a new book or my favorite bar of chocolate.
- I found an exercise buddy in my neighborhood, who shared my goals and interests. We motivated each other and kept each other accountable. We also had fun together and made exercise more enjoyable.
- I mixed up my routine and tried different activities. I didn't want to get bored or stuck in a rut. So I experimented with different forms of exercise, like yoga, dancing, skipping etc. I didn’t do intense workouts. I knew I wasn’t cut out for it.
- I focused on the benefits of exercise, not the drawbacks. I reminded myself of how good I felt after exercising, how much energy I had, how much better I slept, how much healthier I looked and how much happier I was. I also thought of the long-term benefits of exercise, like preventing diseases, improving my mood and boosting my confidence. This self-talk really motivated me, kept me on track.
It wasn't easy, but it was worth it. Now I love exercise, that is simple walking, and I can't imagine living without it. I have made a lot of friends on the way, by the way. I have to leave now, or else I’ll miss them. Bye, see you too if you are out walking my way!
